The Challenge
Predicting commodity prices is one of the hardest problems in finance.
Unlike stocks, which are tied to company fundamentals, commodity prices are influenced by an enormous range of factors: geopolitical events, weather patterns, currency fluctuations, supply chain disruptions, seasonal demand cycles, and macroeconomic trends. A frost in Brazil affects coffee prices. A pipeline shutdown in the Gulf affects crude. A stronger dollar affects gold.
Professional trading desks spend millions on data, infrastructure, and talent trying to gain even a small edge in these markets. Hedge funds deploy teams of quantitative researchers to build models that might outperform by a fraction of a percent.
For individual investors, traders, and analysts, access to this kind of predictive intelligence has been out of reach — until now.
Our Approach
We built Vector1 Commodity Predictions from the ground up with a single goal: generate accurate, actionable forecasts using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques.
Here’s how we approached the problem.
Extensive Feature Engineering
Raw price data alone isn’t enough to make good predictions. Our system generates over 100 derived features for each commodity, capturing patterns that aren’t visible in simple price charts.
These features fall into several categories: momentum indicators that measure the strength and direction of recent price movements, volatility measures that capture market uncertainty, technical signals used by professional traders, cross-commodity relationships that reveal how different markets influence each other, and calendar-based patterns that account for seasonal trends and day-of-week effects.
Feature engineering is often the difference between a model that works and one that doesn’t. We invested significant effort here.
Multi-Model Ensemble
No single model architecture excels at every type of prediction. Some models are better at capturing short-term momentum. Others excel at identifying longer-term trends. Some handle volatile markets well. Others perform better in stable conditions.
Rather than betting on one approach, we evaluated multiple state-of-the-art architectures from recent academic research and industry practice. Our production system uses an ensemble approach — combining signals from different model types to produce more robust predictions than any single model could achieve alone.
We continuously evaluate model performance and adjust the ensemble weights based on recent accuracy. Models that perform well get more influence. Models that underperform get less.
Rigorous Backtesting
Before deploying any model to production, we test it extensively on historical data. But we go beyond simple backtesting — we use walk-forward validation that simulates real-world conditions, where the model only sees data that would have been available at the time of each prediction.
This prevents a common problem in financial machine learning: overfitting to historical patterns that don’t repeat in the future.
Continuous Learning
Markets change. Patterns that worked last year might not work this year. Our system tracks prediction accuracy in real-time and flags when model performance degrades. This allows us to investigate and adapt before small problems become big ones.
What We Predict
Our system currently covers seven major US commodities:
Crude Oil WTI — The global benchmark for oil prices, influencing everything from gasoline to plastics.
Gold — The traditional safe-haven asset, often moving inversely to market risk appetite.
Silver — An industrial and precious metal with unique supply-demand dynamics.
Natural Gas — Highly volatile and seasonal, driven by weather and energy demand.
Copper — Often called “Dr. Copper” for its ability to signal economic health.
Corn — A staple crop with implications for food prices and ethanol production.
Wheat — A global food commodity sensitive to weather and geopolitical factors.
For each commodity, we generate forecasts at three horizons: 1-day, 5-day, and 10-day. Each forecast includes a predicted price and the expected percentage change from current levels.
The Dashboard
We designed the dashboard to give you everything you need at a glance, while allowing you to dive deeper when you want more detail.
Commodity Cards
The main view shows cards for each commodity with the current price and forecast indicators. Green arrows indicate predicted price increases. Red arrows indicate predicted decreases. The percentage shows the expected magnitude of the move.
Interactive Charts
Click any commodity to see a detailed price chart. The chart shows historical prices as a solid line and our forecasts as a dashed line extending into the future. Toggle between 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day historical views to see how current prices compare to recent trends.
Forecast Table
For a comprehensive view, the forecast table shows all commodities and all horizons in one place. Quickly scan to see which commodities have the strongest predicted moves in either direction.
Accuracy Tracking
This is where we’re different from most prediction services.
We don’t just make predictions and hope you forget about them. We track every prediction against actual outcomes and publish the results. Our accuracy tab shows two key metrics:
Prediction Error measures how close our forecasts were to actual prices. Lower is better.
Directional Accuracy measures how often we correctly predicted whether prices would go up or down. This matters because even a small error can be costly if you’re on the wrong side of the trade.
We believe transparency builds trust. If our models aren’t working, you’ll see it in the data.
Individual Investors
If you’re considering investments related to commodities — energy stocks, mining companies, agricultural ETFs, or the commodities themselves — our forecasts give you a data-driven perspective to complement your research. See what direction our models expect prices to move before making decisions.
Active Traders
No single signal should drive a trading decision, but adding an AI-generated forecast to your analysis toolkit can provide an additional perspective. Compare our predictions against your own technical or fundamental analysis.
Financial Professionals
Wealth managers, financial advisors, and analysts can use our forecasts as one input when discussing commodity exposure with clients or building market outlooks.
Researchers and Academics
Our accuracy tracking creates a public record of prediction performance over time. Researchers studying forecasting methods or market efficiency may find this data useful.
The Generally Curious
Even if you never trade a commodity, understanding these markets helps you understand the world. Why are gas prices rising? What’s happening with food costs? Our dashboard makes these markets more accessible.
A Note on Expectations
We want to be clear about what this is and isn’t.
This is a tool to inform your thinking, not a crystal ball. No model — ours or anyone else’s — can predict commodity prices with certainty. Markets are influenced by unpredictable events. Black swans happen.
Our models are based on historical patterns. When markets behave in historically unprecedented ways, predictions become less reliable. We try to account for this, but uncertainty is inherent to the problem.
We track and publish our accuracy precisely because we want you to evaluate our predictions critically. Look at our track record. See where we’re strong and where we struggle. Use that context when interpreting new forecasts.
The goal is to give you better information than you had before — not perfect information.
