Why a 95% accurate agent fails most long tasks
Agents chain steps, and errors compound: 95% per step is only 36% over 20 steps. The fix is architecture, not a better prompt: check each step, retry what fails, and hand the rest to a person. This calculator shows what that buys you in success rate and what it costs per task actually completed.
Per task
Task success rate by number of steps
Side by side, per 1,000 tasks
How it's computed: each step succeeds with the agent's accuracy. With a verifier, a flagged step is retried; after the last retry it goes to a person, who fixes it. Bad steps the verifier misses slip through, and one slipped step spoils the task. Steps are treated as independent, which is optimistic for real agents whose errors cluster on hard tasks.
